Ever notice how a good way to get to know people is to learn the words they use? I trust this will help you learn about the West Michigan mindset: DRIVING GLOSSARY Division – Street that divides the city into Eastern and Western halves, and a motif in earthy slang. I.e., if you were walking on Division, don’t say you were “Walking Division” unless you’d like to be confused for, how do I put this delicately? An entrepreneur of the flesh. Also, “Ending up on Division and Wealthy” means “Failing at one’s career and life.” Fulton – Street that divides the city into Northern and Southern halves. Strangely, there is no slang associated with Fulton. The Lake – Lake Michigan, even though other lakes are closer to Grand Rapids. If you ask someone from West Michigan how they know what direction they’re traveling in, they’ll point say “Because the Lake is that way.” Ask them how they know that and they’ll look at you funny. West Side – (1) one of the older neighborhoods in GR; contains rich deposits of character and Polish sausage. (2) The western half of GR. Note: no one can think of a name for the “East Side” of the city. Oh one more thing—when you’re driving, don’t honk your horn. We’d rather fume in polite silence than honk and let everyone know we’re impatient. That’s just the West Michigan way. ©Medical Mile LLC www.medicalmile.com
