Grand Rapids has been home to vibrant theater since the first years of the 20th century. Did you know that in 1905 Groucho Marx sang in a vaudeville theater just outside the city limits?
That theater was torn down years ago, but there’s at least one place in Grand Rapids you can still see a restored ceiling from the golden age of vaudeville: Wealthy Street’s Kitchen Design Studio.
If you prefer live theater to antique ceilings, Grand Rapids has some good options for you. If you enjoy improve comedy, I recommend checking out River City Improv.
Take a look at what’s playing at the Civic Theater. A bonified Grand Rapids institution, the Civic got its start all the way back in 1926, when it was a group of performers with no building—the Civic Players.
I also recommend checking out what’s playing at Spectrum Theater on Fountain Street. Owned by Grand Rapids Community College, at Spectrum you can see productions from groups such as Actors’ Theater (“The Off-Broadway of Grand Rapids”), Jewish Theater Grand Rapids, and Heritage Theater.
