As the name implies, carbohydrate addiction is a compelling craving for carbohydrate-rich foods; an escalating, recurring need for starches, sweets, and snacks such as breads, cakes, cookies, donuts, ice cream, potato chips, pasta, and sugar-sweetened drinks. Though many people suspect there is a physical imbalance that makes them crave carbohydrates, the underlying cause of their cravings often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Many studies suggest that a decrease in blood sugar stimulates hunger. This might help explain a craving for foods high in carbohydrates, a quick energy source. Other studies suggest that the “mind-mood-food connection” may be explained by decreases in the brain chemical serotonin. Serotonin helps one feel less pain, anxiety, and stress—it improves mood by increasing relaxation. Others caution that these cravings may be a learned response. What can be done? The American Heart Association recommends choosing a variety of foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. While people need to watch their calorie intake, they should consume a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains/high-fiber foods daily. Combined with two or three servings of fat-free or lowfat dairy products, most healthy diets will contain at least 45-65 percent of calories from carbohydrates. Diets severely restricted in carbohydrates may be low in components the body needs. Other recommendations: Eat less but more often. Avoid nutrient-stripped foods made of white flour, white rice, and refined sugar. Limit your intake of alcohol, fruit juice, and caffeinated drinks. Get enough sleep, drink water, and exercise. ©Medical Mile LLC www.medicalmile.com Quote this article on your site To create link towards this article on your website, copy and paste the text below in your page.
