Summer is a great time to include a variety of fresh fruits in your diet, because that’s when they’re the most plentiful. If you’re like me, you look forward to juicy strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries fresh off the vine. And in many states, such as Michigan, you can pick them yourself. So as you’re picking berries, you get the added bonus of fresh air and exercise! But don’t forget to drink plenty of water when you do.

If you love fresh vegetables, summer is the best time to get them locally grown. What’s also good about summer is that the veggies ripen at different times throughout the season and thus can add variety to your diet. First come the early vegetables like peas and asparagus and lettuce, followed by zucchini and summer squash, followed by tomatoes (actually a fruit) and green peppers—just to name a few.

The best (though not the easiest) way to get fruits and vegetables fresh off the vine is to grow your own garden. It takes time and effort but the end results are very rewarding. And if you want a workout, hoeing and weeding a garden is just the ticket!
