Guys, if you’re like me you have more trouble getting motivated to work your core and lower body. I’d like to share my theory about this difficulty, and then I’d like to share a possible solution to it.

The Theory
We know what “manly” looks like—broad shoulders, big chest, strong arms—and maybe it’s this perception that makes working the upper body feel more fun, more like adventure than hard work… more downright manly.

Most guys don’t like to work on their lower body. My personal theory is that it doesn’t feel manly. A sore chest, sore arms—these things make me feel more manly.

The Solution
A friend of mine who’s a police officer really helped me out when he told me this: the strongest punchers can squat close to 800 pounds. Why is that?

Remember the power in Mike Tyson’s uppercut? Of course Tyson had a strong upper body, but his devastating punching power started in his legs, carried through his abs, to finally whip out of his upper body.

Don’t believe me? Watch Tyson’s old fights. Or get a load of the rippling leg muscles on MMA fighters in the UFC. And next time you’re unmotivated to work your lower body or core, just think: it’s what strong men do.
