I’ve always liked that Frank Sinatra tune “All or Nothing at All,” but it’s a horrible guide to relationships and health. I had a conversation that illustrates this. Here, let me show you…

[Setting: Fast food restaurant. JOHN is having a burger and soda while ADAM has fried chicken and water.]

JOHN: [Sighs] I’m feeling pretty unhealthy these days. I’m thinking about being a vegetarian next month so I can get back on the right track.

ADAM: That doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but you don’t have to start with something so drastic. Maybe cut out soda for a while? And take a walk each day? I’ve been feeling better both physically and mentally, feeling less antsy and stressed, just from doing a little cardio each day—

JOHN: —I’m glad, but “a little” cardio wouldn’t work for me. With my brain chemistry, I’d need to be doing some intense work to have any effect.

ADAM: Well, I asked a psychologist about that, and they said people see results even when they only work out for 10 minutes. You can’t lose.

JOHN: Well, I really should start running.

[JOHN and ADAM remember that John has never been a runner.]

ADAM: You like riding your bike, right?

JOHN: Yes, but running is more demanding, and…

[JOHN and ADAM begin to sing a disco version of “All or Nothing at All.” They start dancing and are joined by the waitresses, then other restaurant patrons. Three minutes later they have all burned roughly 30 calories.]

THE END
Postscript – Okay, that last part didn’t really happen. But the rest is true!
