Seniors

According to the CDC and other sources, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over is projected to increase from 12.4 percent in 2000 to 19.6 percent (or 1 out of 5 Americans) in 2030. And the age group of 85 and over is the fastest growing segment of the population.

Perhaps you’re over 65 or fast approaching that age bracket and have parents in their 70s or 80s. You’re thinking about your retirement and about what to do when your aging parents need to change their living situation. What will you do when that time comes?

First of all, know your options. Home care choices include personnel who help elders with health care or personal care. With adult day care, the senior is taken to a facility daily or a few days a week. Respite care brings a trained person into the home to give the fulltime care provider time-out for appointments or vacations.

Adult congregate communities are designed for the able-bodied. A medical center is on site and a nurse is always on duty. Assisted living communities are rental retirement communities for independent seniors who need some assistance. Life care or continuing care communities provide a continuum of care from independent living to nursing home care on the premises. Personal care homes provide shelter, supervision, meals, and personal care to a small number of residents.

Knowing your options now helps you make an informed decision later.
