 Carbapenems. What the Heck are these? Carbapenems. Heard of them? We thought not. They are a group of antibiotics, powerful ones, used for acute infections. They attack and fight multi-drug resistent pathogens. What? Really, in terms we can understand, they are antibiotics of desperate remedy or last resort. We hope you will not need them, but in case you do... The Veterans Health Administration has monitored a 5 year study on these drugs used in their hospitals around the country. What they found is that these drugs are being prescribed more often. Does that mean that other antibiotics are not working? Not necessarily. It does appear that the bacteria IS able to throw up the gaunlet to more and more Carbapenems, the antibiotics used when all else fails. The Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America, lets just call them (SHEA), met at their annual conference in early April this year. They sampled 101 VA acute care facilities. Even though antibiotic use is up across the board, what is alarming that these high end desperate remedy drugs are up 102%!! Over double, in just the last five years. "OK, well those are VA hospitals and our brave solders were exposed to many things we are were not." True, however, the data has been compared to non-VA hospitals and results are comparable. Dr. Makoto Jones, MD officiated this 5 year study and his team noted the broad spectrum antibiotics are on the increase, overall. Hmmmm, now we know why doctors, even MedicalMile doctors, are not quick to write a "script." Other treatments are being utilized before dispensing antibiotics right away. Are the muli-drug resistant organisms winning? Given no new future discovery of antibiotics? Yes. But as the medical profession practices "antibiotic stewardship" we also need to do our part not to live life with reckless abandon thinking we all have access to miracle drugs that will fix us!
