2 new nursing leadership positions have been assigned by the Helen Devos Children's Hospital. Joan Rikli, MSN, RN and Jeni Wincek, MSN, RN are the 2 that have been given the task of directing certain care for not only our own Grand Rapids children, but also the children of North, South, East and West Michigan. GLOBAL "PANDEMICS" AND SOME FACTS
by Debra Marcusse
As someone looking for the facts about the swine flu “pandemic,” I checked out the Australian flu statistics this past summer. In the southern hemisphere the seasons are the reverse of ours, and Australia’s bad flu season (“austral winter”) is during our summer. While the government websites over there spoke of masses of people clogging the emergency rooms, I spoke to an Australian nurse friend who said quite the opposite. “Didn’t notice anything extraordinary,” were her words. The Medical Mile is the generally accepted and used name for a length of Michigan Street in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Wikipedia says that it is "approximately a mile of medical-related development in the Hillside District of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, bordering both sides of Michigan Street. It has also been referred to as Grand Rapids Medical Corridor, Michigan Street Medical Corridor, Health Hill, Medical Hill, and Pill Hill, among other names.
"It was started in 1996 with the founding of the Van Andel Institute by Jay and Betty Van Andel. It has since expanded to include the Grand Rapids Community College's Calkins Science Center across Bostwick Avenue, Spectrum Health's Butterworth Hospital complex, Grand Valley State University's Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, and Michigan State University Secchia Center Medical School, among other facilities in the area."
Michigan Street in Grand Rapids has a long history and was one of the first streets. It has been home to the Post Office, the Grand Rapids Press, and other important organizations. Yet it's becoming known as a neighborhood as well.
