"We Will Lick Cancer" Dr. Hutchinson went on. "Every body contracts cancer cells from time to time, unknown to the person. Most of the time, a healthy blood stream will deliver those lymphocytes where they're needed, and in sufficient quantity, and the cancer cells are dissolved and expelled. We here, and around the world, are trying to find the way to send that army of white blood cells to the places where the cancer cells have established a foothold. When we accomplish that, we'll lick cancer." He said the medical research world feels there's something like a virus that infects otherwise healthy cells, and chemically distorts or corrupts their DNA. Those cells go on living in the organ, and reproducing – but now controlled by a different blueprint. They become renegades and as they grow they disrupt the functions of the organ, contaminate and ruin it, eventually spreading through the body, using the bloodstream, and cause death. The powerful antidote – the lymphocytes or white corpuscles2. A healthy immune system, as it’s called. Hutchinson Center researchers lead a revolutionary new field called immunotherapy3, which yields effective cancer treatments with far fewer side effects than conventional therapy. Immunotherapy harnesses the power of the immune system to fight cancer, much as it naturally eliminates everyday infections like the common cold. Originally used as a strategy to treat cancer by enhancing immune activity directed at tumor cells or neoplasms, immunotherapy has expanded to encompass many types of treatments as the strategy has been applied and adapted to the treatment of a greater variety of diseases. Immunotherapy is a medical term defined as "Treatment of disease by inducing, enhancing, or suppressing an immune response." Immunotherapies are classified by type, depending upon whether they are designed to direct, amplify or elicit an immune response focused on a particular pathogen, or reduce or suppress the immune response already present which may itself be pathogenic. Therapies designed to elicit or amplify an immune response are classified as Activation Immunotherapies. Some vaccinations fall into this category. Those designed to reduce, suppress or more appropriately direct an existing immune response, as in cases of autoimmunity or allergy, are classified as Suppression Immunotherapies. In many parts of Asia, medicinal mushrooms are thought to be able to boost the immune system naturally. Research suggests mushrooms such as Agaricus blazei4 may be a food which naturally increases the activity of various immune system cells. Conversely, sugar is said to be an immune system suppressant. Studies at Harvard reveal a dependency of tumor cells on glucose metabolism5. You might be surprised how much your health can be improved by simply cutting most sugar from your diet. Stay tuned as we continue to research novel ways to beat the dreaded scourge of cancer. 1 The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, located in Seattle, was established in 1975 and is one of the world’s leading cancer-research institutes. Its interdisciplinary teams of scientists conduct research in the laboratory, at patient bedside, and in communities throughout the world to advance the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer and other diseases. Dr. William Hutchinson, founder of the renowned clinic and research center1, asked a visitor, "Would you like to see cancer cells?" He produced a number of slides which showed tiny, black, iridescent blisters, pulsing with menace. The visitor wondered what could possibly fight these evil things, and the doctor stuck produced another slide which revealed a bunch of perfectly round clear circles. "These are the lymphocytes or white blood cells, first defense of the body’s immune system."
