Vaccination
Controversy abounds over whether to get a flu shot this year.

On the one hand, the government and most health facilities are urging you to get that vaccination, especially if you fall into certain categories. To make it more difficult, those categories are different for regular (seasonal) flu and for the H1N1 flu making headlines this year. There is also the decision whether to get a traditional shot (dead virus) or a nasal spray vaccine (live virus). Which is better?

On the other hand, many knowledgeable people urge caution, citing the 1970's fiasco regarding government-run vaccination programs (more people suffered adverse consequences from the vaccination than from the flu itself). A recent poll shows that over 60 percent of adults are thinking they won't get the flu shot. Some are just afraid of shots, but some have heard there are untold dangers in receiving the vaccine. Is this true?

How will you make all these decicions? Will you just let your doctor decide? Will you do what the health services tell you to do? Or do you have another guru you prefer to listen to?

Our stance here at MedicalMile.com is, YOU DECIDE. We are not here to be anyone's guru. We are here to provide information from a wide variety of sources. We are here to help you find the information you need.  We will put up articles from government sources, medical sources, and any others we think will help give you the information you need to decide this question for yourself.

But the ultimate decision is yours. We make no recommendations. We can't tell you what to do. After all, only you are responsible for your health.

But we are here for you. If you feel there are areas we have not covered, we invite you to let us know that.

By the way, the Kent county statistics on influenza cases for the first week of October are that the total of reported cases is 389; about 70 percent of theseare the "Type A" (H1N1) strain, with the highest percentage of cases being brought in belonging to school age children (6-17).

Their best advice seems to be:  Stay home from work if you are sick.  Keep children home from school if they are ill.
