Medical Mile reports Baxter Healthcare has been ordered to Recall and Destroy all its Colleague Volumetric Infusion Pumps. Infusion pumps are devices that deliver fluids, including nutri- ents and medications, into a patient’s body in a controlled manner. They are widely used in hospitals, other clinical settings and, increasingly, in the home because they allow a greater level of accuracy in fluid delivery. Baxter will need to:
As many as 200,000 of these Baxter Colleague may be in use. The Food and Drug Administration and Baxter have been working since 1999 to remedy the issue in question. The FDA has logged over 50,000 "adverse events" about infusion pumps in general and over 500 deaths have occured. Baxter Healthcare indicated they would get to the remaining solutions to remedy their Colleague Infusion Pumps about 2013. They have made numerous changes to the pumps since 2006.
