No reports of patient problems have been reported to date.
The American Red Cross is one of several that supply blood to the national public.


The American Red Cross has been sited before, since 2003 for millions of dollars. The reason appears to be that the Red Cross when collecting and manufacturing of blood products did not comply with Federal laws and regulations. They compromised the potential safety and manufacture of tplatelets, plasma and red cells.

In October, 2009  the FDA notified the American Red Cross that inspection in 2008 and 2009 exposed the failure to identify problems. This protocol would prevent or bring to light any problems associated with collection and manufacture of the blood products.

Since 2003, the American Red Cross has made progress addressing some of its quality issues, including standardizing procedures, upgrading its National Testing Laboratories, and increasing oversight of the organization. However, to fully comply with federal regulations and consent decree provisions, the American Red Cross must make swift, additional progress on all of the issues the FDA has identified.
